Romeo Kumalo

Romeo Kumalo is a co-founder of LLH Capital, along with long-time friend and investment partner, Gil Oved.

He favours high-potential businesses that create an enabling environment for underserved populations, and is passionate about projects that unlock opportunities for young people.

An accomplished leader with more than three decades of diversified experience in ICT, investments, and corporate leadership, Romeo served on the Board of Vodacom South Africa as Executive Commercial Director and was a member of the Vodacom Group Executive Committee. He also led Vodacom Tanzania as CEO, based in Dar es Salaam, was CEO of Vodacom International, and served as director of several Vodacom International subsidiaries across Africa.

As a Shark on the South African edition of the renowned Shark Tank entrepreneurship TV show, Romeo relished the opportunity to share his knowledge and insights with the founders presenting their plans and dreams for the future.

A respected voice on entrepreneurship, telecommunications, broadband infrastructure, media, and regulation, Romeo is a regular panelist, keynote speaker, and advisor on matters shaping digital economies in emerging markets. Known for his clarity of thought and communication, he maintains well-established networks globally.

He holds a master’s degree in Commerce from Unisa, and holds executive management certificates from the University of the Witwatersrand, INSEAD, GIBS and Stanford, and is an alumnus of Harvard Business School. Romeo serves on the Executive Committee of the Cape Town chapter of YPO.

Romeo spends his spare time hunting for the golf balls he’s landed in weird and wonderful places on various golf courses, and is halfway to completing the Six Star Finisher major marathon challenge. He’s a jazz aficionado, and a lifelong Arsenal fan, much to Gil’s dismay.

Gil Oved is a co-founder of LLH Capital, along with long-time friend and investment partner, Romeo Kumalo.

Gil is passionate about investing more than capital alone in the investments chosen by LLH Capital, and seeks high-potential ventures where he is also able to offer his time, wisdom and expertise to help inspire and build the entrepreneurs behind the businesses.

Launching his first venture at the age of 19 producing TV shows for South Africa’s national broadcaster, Gil built several businesses from scratch, including co-founding and being the Co-CEO of The Creative Counsel Group (TCC), which became one of Africa’s largest sales, marketing and advertising agencies over 15 years. TCC was sold to Publicis Groupe in 2015 in what was considered one of the largest transactions in the sector on the African continent.

Gil was a Shark on the South African edition of the Shark Tank and an investor on the Dragon’s Den, achieving great outcomes from his investments made through the shows. He was also featured on National Geographic’s ‘Undercover Angel’ TV show in the UK where he provided philanthropic funding and expertise for various community projects, leading them to self-sustainability.

A member of the global Young Presidents Organisation (YPO) where he has held many leadership roles, Gil is a sought-after leader and global speaker on investing, technology and entrepreneurship. He has also published a book on entrepreneurship, called ‘I’m In’.

He holds a Bachelor of Commerce (Cum Laude) from the University of South Africa, is a Chartered Financial Analyst, and a Harvard Business School Alumnus.

Gil is a long-suffering Tottenham Hotspur fan, can’t get going in the morning without at least three cups of good coffee, and wants to have a dog one day when he grows up.
Basetsana Kumalo

Basetsana Kumalo is an investor at LLH Capital, along with Romeo Kumalo and Gil Oved.

The Founder and CEO of Basetsana Women Investment Holdings (BWIH) Pty Ltd, a private equity firm with a diverse portfolio in fintech, media, mining, travel and tourism. Over three decades, the serial entrepreneur has created thousands of jobs through her various companies.

In every industry she has entered, she has made an indelible impact on the lives of women in South Africa. She is the Chairperson of the Business Women’s Association of South Africa (BWA), the largest businesswomen’s network in the country, which was established 40 years ago. This organization has made a tangible impact in the advancement and empowerment of women so that women become part of the mainstream of the economy.

Across diverse industries such as media, real estate, technology, and mining a career spanning 30 years has seen Basetsana lead, collaborate, and fight tenaciously to build a legacy that has been recognized by UNICEF, the World Economic Forum, Stellenbosch University and the Nelson Mandela Institute for Rural Education and Development.

In Bassie’s memoir, My Journey of Hope, she chronicles the story of a young girl thrust onto the world stage when she became Miss South Africa in 1994 and first runner up in Miss World 1994. That opportunity led to a television career whose highs include interviewing music legends Michael Jackson and Luther Vandross, talk show queen Oprah Winfrey, and all the South African Presidents including Nelson Mandela.

Passionate about entrepreneurship, mentorship, and women’s development and building the next generation of leaders, she has directly mentored and educated many young people, the bulk of them women, who have gone on to excel in their respective fields.

She is the Patron of IamtheCode, the first African-led global movement to mobilize governments, the private sector, philanthropic foundations, investors, and civil society to advance STEAMD (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics, and Design) education. Its goal is to mobilize these groups to invest in future technologies that can drive sustainable development for women and girls in marginalized communities.
